Brent Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Brent Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, visitors and customers. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services carried out in residential and commercial premises.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities. We will identify and control hazards associated with cleaning chemicals, machinery, manual handling and work within customer properties. We strive to comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry standards.

Health and safety is an integral part of our business planning and daily operations. Management, supervisors and all employees share responsibility for maintaining a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who will provide the necessary resources, information and training to implement this policy. Managers will ensure safe systems of work, appropriate equipment, and clear procedures are in place and followed.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing safe working practices on each job, briefing staff on specific site hazards, and monitoring that work is carried out safely and professionally.

Employees must cooperate with health and safety measures, follow training and instructions, use equipment correctly, and report hazards, near misses and accidents immediately. Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others who may be affected by their work.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We will carry out risk assessments for our cleaning activities and review them regularly. This includes considering risks related to slips and trips, wet floors, electrical equipment, moving and handling, exposure to chemicals, confined spaces and working around customers, children, pets and members of the public.

For each job, staff will assess the area before starting work and adopt appropriate control measures. This may include the use of signage for wet floors, safe cable routing, securing hoses, restricting access to work areas, and ensuring adequate ventilation when using cleaning solutions.

Use of Machinery and Electrical Equipment

All carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, rotary machines and other powered equipment will be maintained in safe working order, inspected regularly and used only by trained staff. Faulty equipment must be removed from use and reported to management without delay.

Staff will follow safe procedures for connecting and disconnecting from power supplies, avoid overloading sockets and prevent trailing cables from creating trip hazards. Equipment will be transported, loaded and unloaded safely to minimise the risk of injury and damage to property.

Chemicals and Cleaning Solutions

We will use cleaning agents and treatments in line with manufacturer guidance, safety data information and applicable chemical safety regulations. Products will be stored, labelled and handled responsibly to minimise risk to employees, customers and the environment.

Staff will be trained in correct dilution, application and disposal methods, and in actions to take in case of spills, splashes or accidental exposure. Wherever possible, we will select products that balance effective cleaning performance with low risk to health and surfaces.

Personal Protective Equipment

Brent Carpet Cleaners will provide appropriate personal protective equipment where required, such as gloves, masks, eye protection and protective footwear. Employees are expected to use such equipment correctly, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects.

Personal protective equipment is considered a final line of defence and does not replace the need for safe systems of work and effective risk control measures.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Manual handling is a key part of carpet and upholstery cleaning. We will minimise the need for heavy lifting through the use of trolleys, ramps and mechanical aids where practicable. Staff will receive guidance on correct lifting techniques, team lifting and safe transportation of machines, hoses and containers.

Work will be planned to reduce repetitive strain and awkward postures, and staff are encouraged to take short breaks when appropriate to avoid fatigue and musculoskeletal issues.

Working in Customer Premises

Respect for customer property and safety is central to our operations. Before starting any cleaning work, our staff will walk through the area with the customer where possible to identify fragile items, electrical hazards, loose flooring or other specific risks.

We will take care to protect furniture, fixtures and fittings, and to leave all areas safe and tidy at the end of the job. Children and pets should be kept away from work areas, chemicals and equipment. Our teams will communicate clearly with customers about any necessary access restrictions and estimated drying times for cleaned surfaces.

Training, Communication and Supervision

All employees will receive induction training covering health and safety responsibilities, company procedures, safe use of equipment and emergency arrangements. Additional job-specific training will be provided where needed, and refresher training will be given periodically.

Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written guidance. Supervisors will monitor working practices on site and provide coaching and feedback to maintain high standards of safety and service.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported promptly to management. We will investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Employees will be briefed on emergency procedures, including steps to take in case of fire, serious injury, chemical exposure or sudden illness at a customer location. First aid provisions will be made available, and emergency exits and routes must be kept clear at all times during our work.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

We will regularly review our Health and Safety policy, risk assessments and procedures to ensure they remain effective and up to date with current legislation and best practice. Feedback from employees and customers is welcomed as part of our commitment to improvement.

This Health and Safety policy is endorsed by company management and will be reviewed periodically or sooner if significant changes occur in our operations, equipment, products or legal requirements.

All staff and contractors working for Brent Carpet Cleaners are required to familiarise themselves with this policy and to apply its principles during every cleaning assignment.
